Volunteer

Have a desire to participate in the region's premier athletic event, but that bum knee is keeping you off the course this year?

Volunteer!

Over 9,000 runners, walkers and skippers need your help! (Besides, volunteers get a nifty T-shirt and lunch on us!)

At the College Football Hall of Fame, on the course, at a water stop ... we have just the right job for you (and your family, friends, acquaintances, distant relatives, neighbors, neighbors to whom you just give a wave, and all those folks you send a note to once year during the holidays)! Need more info? Contact the Volunteer Coordinator with any questions you may have.

Sunburst Volunteer Positions

Registration

A first impression is a lasting impression! There are three shifts for smiling volunteers to help with race registration and packet pickup at the College Football Hall of Fame. Come see your friends (old and new) as they pick up their bibs and chips for the Sunburst events!

  • Friday, May 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. (or any time you can offer!)
  • Friday, May 31, from 3:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 1, from 5 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
Gear Check-In

How good do dry clothes feel to a sweaty runner after a long race? Words cannot describe the pleasure! A number of marathoners and half marathoners will bring bags of personal items to the College Football Hall of Fame for transport to Notre Dame. As a volunteer, your job duties include labeling runners' gear bags with their respective bib numbers and placing the items in the proper box for transport to Notre Dame.

  • Saturday, June 1, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Gear Pickup

How do you make hot, tired and sore runners happy after a race? Hand them their bags of personal belongings. Add a smile and "congratulations" and you'll be a hero! Volunteers man the Gear Pickup station at Notre Dame.

  • Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Start Line

Sunburst participants are registered and are now ready for the gun! Volunteers at the start line will help runners line up according to their running speed. Pace signs will be provided for volunteers to hold at the start line for the marathon, half marathon, 10K run and 5K run.

  • Saturday, June 1 from 5:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
Water Stop Captain

Want the undying gratitude of thousands of runners and walkers? Hand out cups of water to thirsty race participants and they will worship you! This is also a terrific way to showcase your group or organization! Your job is to coordinate the efforts of your water stop volunteers. Specific instructions, race details and a map of your location will be provided.

  • Saturday, June 1, time dependent on location
Directional Arrows

V.I.J.!! (Very Important Job!) Can you imagine thousands of runners and walkers heading down the wrong street? Yikes! Volunteers are placed at key intersections and corners along the course to hold directional arrows. We certainly don't want the runners to miss a turn or get off course! This is a fun job to do solo, with a friend or with a small group. Bring lawn chairs, a thermos of coffee, music, and plan to cheer the runners as they pass by your corner!

  • Saturday, June 1, time dependent on location
Pedestrian Control

Spectators are NOT, repeat NOT, allowed on the finish line. Okay, now that we've got that straight, we've just got to remind the spectators of this cardinal rule! A friendly reminder that only those sporting a nifty Sunburst race bib are allowed in the finish chute. Getting our participants to the finish is another story. We need volunteers to direct the exhausted runners along the sidewalks and roads on the Notre Dame campus to make sure they arrive at the finish line as quickly and safely as possible.

  • Saturday, June 1, from 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
  • Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Runner Support

There are lots and lots ways to support our fearless competitors at the finish! Hand out cold towels on a hot day (better than a sack of gold to the participants), hang medals around the necks of finishers, fill up water and Gatorade cups, or you may even get a bullhorn to shout instructions!

  • Saturday, June 1, from 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
  • Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Awards

Hurrah! We get to honor the fastest in the pack! Volunteers will help to determine event winners, distribute medals and assist the winners in filling out the required forms. If you want to hum a little of The Star Spangled Banner as the medals are placed around the winners' necks, go right ahead!

  • Saturday, June 1, from 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
